The Cinnamon StoryCinnamon, as one of the first traded spices in the ancient world, was a popular spice in ancient Arab which made its way to Europe all the way from Arab. In early days in Sri Lanka, cinnamon was not planted for the trade purposes but collected from wild natural groves owned by the kings. As the island was conquered by the Dutch, in 1770 the commercial groves were planted. Today Sri Lanka grows more than 8,000 of the world's output of 10,000 metric tons on a total of 16,000 hectares, mostly small holdings of four to five hectares. The cinnamon that being plated in Sri Lanka is called Ceylon Cinnamon (Cinamomum Zylanicum) which is native Sri Lanka. Cinnamon bark is harvested from a bushy evergreen tree which has small yellow flowers, tender, reddish bark, and leaves with spicy smell. Ceylon Cinnamon which is also called as “true cinnamon”, “pure cinnamon” or “sweet cinnamon” has obtained a wide reputation in global market due to its unique flavor, aroma and quality. Of all the spices that are produced in Sri Lanka, Cinnamon is most important and valuable spice. Cinnamon is used in number of food products such as meat products, bakery products, Asia food, and flavored tea because of its distinctive aroma & flavour. As Cinnamon is in antioxidants it is good for overall health. Because of its widely used in pharmaceutical preparations as well as in the cosmetics industry in various products such as a lipstick, toothpaste, mouthwash, chewing gum, soap, nasal sprays and cough syrups . The preparation of Cinnamon quills involves a combination of art and skill unique to Sri Lanka and has been handed down from generation to generation over centuries.
